Biking: Biking is permitted on the boardwalk trail and the main trail on Kingman Island.
Birding: Over 100 bird species have been identified on Kingman Island, Heritage Island, and in the surrounding wetlands. Click on the following link to download a birding checklist designed by the National Park Service for local parks in the Washington, DC area. Click here for a Birding Checklist.
Boating: Boating is allowed in Kingman Lake and the Anacostia River surrounding Kingman and Heritage Islands, in accordance with DC laws.
Dock access to the island is provided on the boardwalk connecting Kingman and Heritage Islands
Note: The waterways surrounding the islands are tidal; please check Current Tide Data before planning your trip.
Water Quality and Tide Data can be found at a website hosted by the District Department of the Environment. To check the current information at Kingman Island click on the green dot furthest to the right labeled "Benning Road Bridge" after following the link.
Clean Ups and Service Projects: Organized monthly clean ups are offered, with exception to November, every last Saturday of the month, from 10 am to 12 pm. In November, the clean up will be offered on November 21st. Groups and individuals are also welcome to schedule their own project on the islands. Dog Walking: Dogs are allowed in the park provided they remain on a leash. Please take care to clean up after your pet.
Educational Tours: Living Classrooms provides educational tours focused on exciting topics such as the environment and history of Kingman and Heritage Islands Park. Tours are FREE and open to the public every Sunday at 12:30 pm. Please note, Educational Tours will not be offered during the winter season. Environmental Center: The environmental center is still in the planning and construction stage. Please visit the Living Classrooms website to find out more information on the Environmental Center.
Fishing: Fishing is allowed in all areas of the park in accordance with DC Laws. Geocaching: Geocaching is allowed in the park while adhering to park rules.
Hiking: Hiking is permitted on all trails.
Memorial Tree Grove: A memorial tree grove has been proposed for the park to honor those who lost their lives at the Pentagon on September 11th. This garden is still in the planning stage.
Picnicking: Picnicking is allowed in the park. Please remember to remove your trash when you leave.
