Kingman Island and Heritage Island are open to the public during normal scheduled hours. Currently, we are working on developing more extensive trail systems, park services, and facilities. Please feel free to visit the park to see how the projects are coming along.
In the future, Kingman Island will be the home of the Kingman Island Environmental Center, a project with the Office of the Deputy Mayor of Planning and Economic Development. If you are interested in learning more about the environmental center, please visit the project sites from Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region or the District of Columbia.

National Get Outdoors Day was celebrated at Kingman and Heritage Islands Park for the second year in a row! This national event, celebrated all across the United States, focuses on providing youth and families an opportunity to experience new and exciting outdoor activities. The event provided guests opportunities for rock climbing, canoeing, face-painting, biking, geocaching, planting flowers, and so much more all along the Anacostia River in Washington, DC.

Come to Kingman Island and enjoy wonderful Bluegrass and Folk music in the park with family and friends. This FREE music festival is open the public and will feature several local Bluegrass and Folk artists in an gorgeous outdoor venue. In addition, visitors will also have the opportunity to join in on activities offered at the National Get Outdoors Day event at the park.

Earth Day Clean Up at Kingman Island Date: April 24. 2010 Location: Kingman and Heritage Islands Park
This Earth Day 400 voluteers came to Kingman and Heritage Islands Park to clean up the park!In addition to a huge amount of extremely excited volunteers, Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells joined in with the clean up as a part of his continued dedication to cleaning up the Anacostia River in Washington, DC. Kingman and Heritage Islands Park was also was graced with the presence of State Radio band members who came to the park to participate in the special Earth Day volunteer event focused on restoration hosted by EarthShare.
The Earth Day event at Kingman and Heritage Islands Park drew a great crowd and allowed for the community to participate in trash pick-up and trail maintenance, greatly enhancing the park. The event was a part of a larger collaborative effort to clean up locations within the Anacostia watershed in Washington, DC and Maryland coordinated by the Anacostia Watershed Society.

Potomac Watershed Clean Up at Kingman and Heritage Islands Park
Dates: April 9 and 10, 2010
This This year Kingman and Heritage Islands Park celebrated the 22nd Annual Potomac Watershed Clean Up twice! On April 9th, Level 3 Communications brought volunteers to the park in order to pick up trash and work on park maintenance with Living Classrooms. In Addition, on April 10th The Student Conservation Association brought out over 60 volunteers to pick up trash along the Anacostia River and provide trail maintenance for the park. The Anacostia River is a significant tributary to the Potomac River and preventing pollution from entering the Anacostia River assists in keeping the Potomac River and Chesapeake trash free environments!
Living Classrooms thanks The Student Conservation Association, Level 3 Communications, and all of the volunteers who provided thier valuable time to clean up Kingman and Heritage Islands Park along the Anacostia River as a part of the 22nd Annual Potomac Watershed Clean Up hosted by Alice Ferguson Foundation.
Date: Monday, January 18th 2010 Time: 9:30 am- 1:30 pm Location: Kingman and Heritage Islands Park The Student On January 18th, 2010 over 80 volunteers came out to Kingman and Heritage Islands Park with the Student Conservation Association. Volunteers were able to clear invasive bush honeysuckle, work on developing better trails on Heritage Island, and removed a huge amount of trash from all over the park.

3rd Annual Debris Clean Up Event and Anacostia River Celebration
On November 6th, Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region hosted its 3rd Annual Debris Clean-up Event and Anacostia River Celebration at Kingman and Heritage Islands Park. Students from River Terrace and Turner Elementary Schools picked up trash along the Anacostia River in Washington, DC with the help from volunteers and sponsors from the American Chemistry Council, Anacostia Watershed Society, and DC Cares. Students took part in several environmental education opportunities, as well as explored the Anacostia River by land and canoe.
Special honorary guests included Chuck Fox, Senior EPA adviser on the Chesapeake Bay, Dottie Younger, the Anacoastia Riverkeeper, Henry Dixon, from Shell Hydrogen, and a representative from Senator Benjamin Cardin's (MD) office. All guests have worked to rigorously to restore the environment.

National Get Outdoors Day is a new annual event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun. Living Classrooms was excited to assist in hosting the National Get Outdoors Day event in the Washington, DC metro area. During the event, youth and families were presented with opportunities to participate in outdoor pursuits in which they could learn to experience the nature and lead healthy lifestyles.

Kingman Island Day was a day of celebration and festivities as well as exciting opportunities for restoration activities and educational events focused around Kingman Island as an asset to the greater Washington, DC community. As Kingman and Heritage Islands Park was recently been re-opened to the public, visitors were able to join as a community to share in the excitement of enjoying this wonderful natural area in their neighborhood, and explore the new features of the park.
On Kingman Island Day, visitors to the park were treated to a variety of exciting activities for the whole family. Residents from local neighborhoods and all across DC, Maryland, and Virginia came out to celebrate during the event. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton as well as DC Councilmembers Tommy Wells (ward 6), Yvette Alexander (ward 7), and Mary Che (ward 3) also came out to show their support. Jack Wennersten, author of Anacostia: The Death and Life of an American River, also shared his thoughts on the day. Wonderful performances were given by Green River Junction and Northeast Performing Arts Center.

Kingman and Heritage Islands were the location of a service project coordinated by the SCA and Living Classrooms, this Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The service project was an amazing success, with the completion of the Heritage Island Loop Trail and trash being removed from all over the park!
